US on Mad Cow: Don’t Test All Cattle
The Bush administration said Tuesday it will fight to keep meatpackers from testing all their animals for mad cow disease .
The Agriculture Department tests less than 1 percent of slaughtered cows for the disease, which can be fatal to humans who eat tainted beef. But Kansas-based Creekstone Farms Premium Beef wants to test all of its cows.
Larger meat companies feared that move because, if Creekstone tested its meat and advertised it as safe, they might have to perform the expensive test, too.
The Agriculture Department regulates the test and argued that widespread testing could lead to a false positive that would harm the meat industry.
A federal judge ruled in March that such tests must be allowed. U.S. District Judge James Robertson noted that Creekstone sought to use the same test the government relies on and said the government didn’t have the authority to restrict it.
The ruling was to take effect June 1, but the Agriculture Department said Tuesday it would appeal effectively delaying the testing until the court challenge plays out.

The state’s director of science curriculum has resigned after being accused of creating the appearance of bias against teaching intelligent design.
Wow! And here is the reason why…..
Comer was put on 30 days paid administrative leave shortly after she forwarded an e-mail in late October announcing a presentation being given by Barbara Forrest, author of “Inside Creationism’s Trojan Horse,” a book that says creationist politics are behind the movement to get intelligent design theory taught in public schools. Forrest was also a key witness in the Kitzmiller v. Dover case concerning the introduction of intelligent design in a Pennsylvania school district. Comer sent the e-mail to several individuals and a few online communities, saying, “FYI.”
So the DIRECTOR of science told a few people regarding an event which was to feature Barbara Forrest who just happens to be a PhD holder in philosophy. This is the state of Texas education. And here is the kicker from the article
The memo adds, “Ms. Comer’s e-mail implies endorsement of the speaker and implies that TEA endorses the speaker’s position on a subject on which the agency must remain neutral.”
Everyone working in the SCIENCE department needs to hold an “unbiased” opinion on Intelligent Design.
You know, there is a joke out there in cyber world which has the punch line where. some where in the future, all the student in the US were applying for seats in universities in India. After seeing this, I think that joke might turn into reality.
